RIA reveals decarbonisation roadmap

Template for decarbonisation? GWR's battery Class 230 at West Ealing on trials. Philip Sherratt

Rapid introduction of battery trains, a rolling programme of electrification and use of alternative fuels could effectively decarbonise the rail network by 2050, according to a new report by the Railway Industry Association.

Its Net Zero Rolling Stock report makes the case for adopting a whole-system approach which plans infrastructure and rolling stock interventions together, which RIA says would be better for customers, taxpayers and the supply chain. Adopting this approach would deliver benefits earlier and target ‘quick wins’ in carbon dioxide emission reductions. It would also provide higher performance and more reliable trains with lower whole-life costs.
